Although segregation might have a bad name because of its association with discrimination, officials trying to create an optimum environment for freshmen at Connecticut's largest high school say separating older students from ninth graders is the best way to give them a meaningful connection to their secondary education. "The research shows that the first year in high school is the determining year where students face the most challenges," said Sal Pascarella , superintendent of the Danbury School District.
